Destinations Are Taking Action With Climate Change
By Lourdes Martin | 10-19-22: As the effects of climate change become increasingly evident, more and more destinations are taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint and protect their natural resources. From building energy-efficient infrastructure to promoting sustainable tourism initiatives, these destinations are leading the way in the battle against climate change. Here are just a few of the many places around the world that are taking action on climate change:
1. The Maldives
The Maldives is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and one of the most vulnerable to climate change. The country is made up of more than 1,000 small islands, and rising sea levels are a significant threat to its future. The Maldives is considered the lowest-lying nation in the world; over 80 percent of the country’s land is below sea level – which means sea levels are rising and coastlines are being eroded.
In order to combat this, the Maldives has begun a number of initiatives, including building artificial islands and planting mangroves. It’s also working to raise awareness about the issue of climate change and its impact on the country.
2. Venice
In Venice, Italy, rising sea levels have been a major problem in recent years. As sea levels rise, floods become more frequent during high tides. Venetian sea levels have been declining for many years. Cruise ships have also been a very big problem in Venice. In response to years of environmental protests, Venice bans cruise ships. Large ships passing through Venice pollute and threaten the buildings’ stability. The decision to ban cruise ships is a victory for environmentalists, but it remains to be seen whether it will be enough to save Venice from the effects of climate change.
3. Morocco
Morocco is a coastal nation located in North Africa. It has a population of over 36 million people and an area of 710,850 square kilometers. The country has a diverse climate, with cooler temperatures in the mountains and more extreme heat in the deserts. Morocco is particularly vulnerable to climate change due to its location. Rising sea levels and changes in precipitation patterns threaten the country’s coastlines and agricultural production. In response to these threats, Morocco has taken steps to increase its use of renewable energy sources. The Moroccan government has set a 52% renewable energy use goal by 2030. They have invested in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power to achieve this goal. They have also created incentives for private investment in renewable energy projects. These efforts will help protect Morocco from the effects of climate change and ensure a secure energy supply for the future.
4. China
The Chinese government is investing billions of dollars in renewable energy and electric vehicles as part of its plan to reduce emissions. The city of Beijing is also working to improve air quality by banning coal burning and offering subsidies for electric cars. These initiatives positively affect air quality in the city, but more needs to be done to reduce traffic congestion and pollution from factories. In addition, the government is working to educate the public about the importance of reducing emissions and protecting the environment. China is leading the way in combating climate change by taking these steps.
5. Australia
Australia has implemented a number of initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint. The country has set a goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, and it is investing in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. In addition, Australia has also committed to restoring 12 million hectares of degraded land by 2030. This will help to sequester carbon, improve soil health, and create habitats for wildlife. These are just some of the ways that Australia is taking action on climate change.
